In the first quarter of this year, production reached 94.672 TM onions, falling 1.8% over the same period of 2010, because the harvested area decreased by 11.7% . This fact is reflected in the reduced harvests in Lima (-19.0%), Lambayeque (-51.4%) and La Libertad (-41.1%), however, Arequipa rose sharply (13.3%). Moreover, nationally, the major producing regions were: Arequipa and Lima, with 60 thousand and 16.4 thousand MT, respectively.
Notably, in 2010, onion production amounted to 720.9 thousand MT, a rise of 19.0% compared to 2009, with Arequipa, Ica, Lima and La Libertad major producing regions, to concentrate 80.5 % of total production
